How To Apply

To apply for initial teacher training with Laidlaw Teacher Training, please use the DfE Apply for Teacher Training service.

Follow these steps to make sure your initial teacher training application process goes smoothly:

1. Select a course and check you meet the entry criteria

Entry Criteria

Your bachelor’s degree can be in any subject to teach primary or secondary. For secondary courses, you need to have a good knowledge of the subject you’re applying to teach.

This could be through having a bachelor’s degree in the subject, or having:

  • an A level in the subject
  • a bachelor’s degree related to but not in the subject – for example, your bachelor’s degree is in engineering but you’d like to teach physics
  • an unrelated bachelor’s degree but relevant professional experience

You can also train to teach primary with a specialist subject, for example primary with maths, so you can develop your knowledge of that particular subject.

Or you can train to teach two subjects at secondary, for example maths with physics, so you can develop the skills to teach in an additional subject.

If your qualifications are from an overseas institution you must apply for a Statement of Comparability from NARIC.‍

Personal Qualities

During the recruitment process, we will be evaluating your potential to become an effective teacher. Our preferred applicants will have the following qualities:

  • a desire to teach and work with young people from all backgrounds;
  • effective communication skills and a collegiate approach;
  • a passion for your subject and strong subject knowledge;
  • a commitment to teaching and the determination to succeed;
  • consistently high standards of personal and professional conduct upholding the public trust in the profession.
Other Requirements

Admission to the course is subject to a satisfactory medical report, as you are required to meet the standards for ‘Fitness to Teach’. It is important that you disclose any medical condition or disability so that we can look at the best way of supporting you if you are offered a place on the course.

You are welcome to discuss any individual needs or adaptations that you may require with us at any time during, or after, the application process.

You will be subject to safeguarding checks which include an enhanced DBS check.

2. Apply via the DfE application service

All applications for our programme must be made online through DfE Apply.

If you have left Higher Education in the last 5 years, please be aware that one of your references must be an academic reference from that institution.

Once your application has been received by us, it will be assessed against our entry criteria.  We consider applications in the order in which they are received and for this reason an early application is advisable.

If your application has been successful, you will be invited to attend an interview.

If you require further information regarding the admissions process, please email TeacherTraining@laidlawschoolstrust.co.uk.

3. Attend an interview

Candidates invited to interview will receive an email with full details of their scheduled session.

The interview is designed to explore each candidate’s potential, as well as any relevant knowledge, skills, or experience that would support their development as a trainee teacher. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the programme.

Applicants who are offered a place to train with us will be asked to provide documentation, including relevant qualifications and identification required for DBS clearance.

4. If you're successful, we will offer you a place

You will be notified of the outcome shortly after your interview.

If successful, we will update DfE Apply with either a conditional or unconditional offer, and follow up with a formal letter outlining the details of your place on the programme.

All offers are subject to successful medical and enhanced criminal record checks. The latter will be processed through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), and full guidance on how to complete this will be provided.
