LST Empowers Year 5 and 6 Pupils with iPads to Revolutionise Learning through EdTech Innovation
BackIn an exciting leap forward for educational technology, over 1,000 Year 5 and 6 pupils at Laidlaw Schools Trust (LST) have received brand-new iPads as part of the Trust’s groundbreaking PedTech initiative, designed to enhance learning through innovative digital tools.
Unboxing Experience: A Roadshow of Excitement
For the past two weeks, Paul Tullock, Executive Lead of PedTech and Innovation at LST, has been leading a captivating unboxing roadshow. During these events, each student has the unique opportunity to unbox, set up, and personalise their iPad, tailoring it to their individual learning needs. As an Apple Professional Learning Specialist and Apple Distinguished Educator, Paul has played a pivotal role in crafting this initiative alongside Rob Atkin, LST’s Head of IT.
Paul emphasises the necessity of integrating modern technology into the classroom, stating, “The world is constantly changing, and we must reflect this evolution in our educational practices if our pupils are to thrive in life after school and in their future careers. Our goal is to redefine teaching and learning, offering experiences and opportunities that are only possible with technology.”
Transformative Learning Through PedTech
The PedTech approach—focusing on pedagogically driven technology use—aims to create an engaging and inclusive learning environment. Paul explains that this strategy is about utilising technology as an integral part of education rather than as a mere substitute for traditional methods. “By personalising their devices, we extend learning beyond the classroom, enabling students to learn at their own pace while also providing challenges that promote deeper understanding. Concepts can be easily revisited, allowing students to consolidate their knowledge in a flexible manner.”
LST is committed to fostering a culture where students become creators rather than mere consumers of technology. By empowering students to choose their tools and approach, they develop vital transferable skills such as communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration—all within authentic, real-world contexts. As Paul points out, “We are dedicated to preparing both staff and students for the dynamic world beyond school, leveraging emerging technologies to cultivate opportunities within the thriving tech sector of the North East.”
Why Let Pupils Unbox Their Devices?
The decision to allow students to unbox their devices was intentional, aimed at fostering a sense of ownership and excitement. For many, this experience marks the first time they’ve interacted with an Apple device, making it even more memorable. This engagement not only enhances the connection students feel toward their new tools but also sets a positive tone for their learning journey.
How iPads Will Enhance Learning
The introduction of iPads into the classroom brings a plethora of accessibility features, ensuring that all students, regardless of language or learning needs, can fully engage with the curriculum. By incorporating iPads, both teachers and students will benefit from personalised feedback, intuitive tools for comprehension, and the development of essential digital skills for the future.
Impact on Teachers
The integration of iPads is set to alleviate teachers' workloads significantly. With features like screen-sharing, educators can instantly share lessons, gauge understanding in real time, and reduce reliance on printed materials. This shift not only supports a healthier work-life balance for teachers but also aligns with sustainable practices.
Voices from the Community
Paul Tullock expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “We want to empower students to demonstrate their understanding by giving them the power of choice and a voice in their learning. The excitement from both staff and pupils during the unboxing has made this initiative far more rewarding than merely distributing pre-loaded devices. It’s incredible to be part of a forward-thinking Trust that is dedicated to providing children with exceptional opportunities and experiences.”

Teacher Insights
Mr. MacDermid, a Year 6 teacher at Atkinson Road Primary Academy, remarked, “The session with Paul was fantastic. Working alongside the children to explore the iPads together was incredibly valuable. I’m excited to see how these devices will enhance learning and provide real-time feedback in lessons.”
In addition to the iPads, LST has established an Apple Regional Training Centre to support teachers within its academies and the broader community, ensuring access to high-quality professional development opportunities.
